Deirdre Muldoon B.Ed, MS, CCC-SLP, G.Dip.SLT, BCABA
Deirdre started Early Language Intervention (ELI) in 2001. ELI is based on a developmental sequence of language acquisition, and the preschool groups are driven by effective teaching strategies that help the children acquire language in a developmentally appropriate manner. Deirdre worked for a short period as a teacher in a mainstream setting before returning to college to study speech and language therapy. She qualified with a master’s degree in speech and language pathology in Albany, New York in 1993. Deirdre then began working in the area of learning disabilities and has continued in this field until today. While in the USA, Deirdre undertook many courses related to her field of speech and language pathology. Among these courses was Picture Exchange Communication training and feeding and oral motor training. Deirdre returned to Ireland in 1997 and continued working as a speech and language pathologist in Ireland. She remained in the field of learning disabilities and started ELI in 2001 having been in private practice and seen the dearth of speech and language services in preschool years. In 2003, Deirdre began a course in behaviour analysis in Trinity College, Dublin. In 2004, Deirdre qualified as a Board Certified Associate Behaviour Analyst. It was at this time that ELI began offering intensive language intervention using the principles of behaviour analysis. In order to further her knowledge in the area of behaviour analysis, Deirdre began another course in Queens University, Belfast which led to a post graduate diploma in social learning theory. Finally, in September 2006, Deirdre began a master’s programme in applied behaviour analysis in the University of Ulster at Coleraine. She will finish this programme in 2008 and will be eligible to sit the Board Certified Behaviour Analyst exam. Deirdre is currently the Executive and Clinical Director of ELI. She consults to preschools and national schools in the areas of behaviour and speech and language development. She currently lectures regularly in the Department of Education in University College, Dublin and has lectured regularly in the past for groups of parents, teachers and special needs assistants.
